This morning we left the house at 5:30 and picked up Amy so we could drive towards the north end of the island to the Dededo area and go to the largest flea market on the island. They start as early as 5:00 AM! In the past it was in a parking lot, and now it is in a very large area and even has a restroom.
I got excited when I saw the vegetable market. All that beautiful, fresh, food laid out on tables. Amy quickly found how had the best prices for different items.
I was hoping there would be some tropical fruit. There were white guavas. I'll buy if they are pink in the center. Some sellers had sugar fruit, a brown skinned fruit that tastes a bit like brown sugar. I can't remember the other name I have learned in the past. There were some persimmons that were supper expensive. I settled on 3 smallish papayas, about $3 each. They are ripe and we can have one per day.
Here you can see what I purchased wing beans, cucumbers, long beans, white radish, garlic chives, okra, and Kang Kong (water spinach or swamp cabbage). You can also see the baby bananas I got on Friday at Leda's stand, little orange calamansi in a bag that are similar in flavor to limes, and some Hawaiian sweet potatoes in the back.
I also wandered around a place they were selling plants and brought home a pink Bougainvillea ($6) a pot of Zinnias ($6), and a beautiful red Aglaonema ($5). I don't know if I could keep the Aglaonema alive in my house at home, so it will be fun to enjoy it here in Guam. Now I have some color on my front porch.
Back at home we made a nice breakfast of brown rice, stir fried Chinese Broccoli with garlic, and scrambled tofu, with fresh sliced cucumbers and little oranges on the side. I was going to add garlic chives to the tofu but was so ready to eat that I forgot.
I have gotten my art table set up, and am eager to get some watercolor on paper. It faces out a window so I can see the hills, some jungle and lawn. My goal is to paint the beauty of Guam while I am here.
This afternoon we joined the Krums and the Supits for a hike to Tarzan Pool. We visited it in 2013, but this time we came in on the other side of the pool.
What a beautiful day for a hike, blue sky and fluffy clouds.
Jonathan and Nathan bushwacked their way in through a swamp, avoiding the trail. They both fly back to the states for school in a day or two. The water was refreshing. The boys jumped right in and entertained us all with their antics.
Mr. Supit played a keyboard so we had peaceful music to enjoy by the water. I sat with my feet in the water and watched the fish and the tadpoles, the clouds, the Pandanus trees and the ferns and the vines and such. Eventually I got Rob to sit there too.
When we got home we ate salad for supper and whatever other things we could scrounge out of the fridge.
Today I got one of my student's parents to connect with me on the internet so I could test the connection for tutoring. It was a wifi test, and there was a little audio distortion so I hope they can come up with a cable for me to plug into the internet. I need clear video and audio for my students. At home ethernet solves all kinds of tutoring issues. I start tutoring on Tuesday, which is Monday at home. Hopefully I can keep all the times and time zones straight.
