Umatic, Guam |
We went on a drive around the southern half of the island yesterday. Our first stop was near the little village of Umatic. This is the site, where tradition says that Ferdinand Magellan, Portuguese explorer, landed in 1521, while circumnavigating the globe. In 1565 Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrived, claiming the island of Guam for Spain.

Plants, with purple undersides, grow out of the walls of the church last used in 1900. |
|
The church was rebuilt many times over the centuries, but finally abandoned after an earthquake. |

Giant tree grows by the old church. Just how old is this tree? How did it survive all the typhoons? |

Unique Bridge in Umatic, Guam. Built in 1985. |
|
It looks like an old bridge, but it is really pretty new. Inside the towers are spiral staircases that are almost completely rusted away. |

Unfortunately no one was there to serve natural coconut juice by the Umatic Bridge. |

It was a rainy, windy day, which didn't make nice picnics, but did make great waves! |
|
A pig family ate lunch near our car, while we ate lunch in our car, to keep out of the rain. This was the cutest piggy of all (if pigs are cute).

It looks like you had a fun day! Beautiful scenery and the warm weather looks so enticing!
ReplyDeleteI drove past your house today. It is very chilly and wintry in CP!
Such beauty! Absorb all the memories you can of this adventure. I think I was on the spiral staircase of that bridge once upon a time. I really liked that little village. never thought it would still be 'little'...
ReplyDeleteWhat fun exploring your new Island. Beaches and daughters make beautiful pictures.
