We attended the Agat Guam SDA church this morning. Actually only the female half of the family attended. The male half stayed back nursing fevers. We felt bad for them, but not bad enough to stay home. The front of the sanctuary is beautiful clear glass windows. I watched the wind blow through the trees while the sermon went on. I found it very relaxing and peaceful, much more beautiful then stained glass.
Everything was relaxed. Island time dominated, and only a few people were there at the beginning of Sabbath School. The bulletin wasn't there until 11:10, but no one seemed to mind. A man read the announcements off of his little computer.
Just before the lesson study, the lady in the above photo came and greeted me in her pretty pink sari. Hepsee was born in Singapore. She taught at Ekamai School in Bangkok in the 1950's and 60's. She and her India born husband later came to Guam. Sometime latter they worked in America for the GC, then they came back to Guam. He has since passed away, but she is going strong at 82 years of age. She is clearly an refined, educated woman, but compassionate to all.
I went to her Sabbath School class with her, and met the man in the photo below. Lee was born on Guam and is a native Chamorro. He grew up Catholic, attended Catholic schools, and didn't know anything else. But he liked to listen to the local Adventist FM radio station. He started listening to Doug Batchelor's Bible Answers Live. He really liked learning about the Bible, because he really didn't know anything about it. There are no pew Bibles in the Catholic churches, and he was never encouraged to read one. Lee started getting his questions answered, so he decided to do the Bible Study guides too. One Sabbath morning he walked into the Seventh-day Adventist Church, met the pastor, and he has attended ever since. This morning he gave the sermon. I felt honored to meet him, and thankful for the ministry of the local radio station, and Doug Batchelor.
We stayed for the potluck and enjoyed beans and rice, curry, and bananas cooked in coconut milk. I really like it here. I feel so blessed to attend church today.
How beautiful to hear your experience at a new church! I agree about the clear glass instead of stained glass.
