Back in 1976, the Bi-centennial year for America, my elementary school had a celebration. Students were given scripts to learn, talking about famous Americas. We dressed up as best we could to match the character. I represented Sacajawea the Native American lady who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805-1806. My grandma made me a fringe dress, the color of buckskin. My family worked together to make a native style baby carrier to wear on my back, and my life size baby doll went into that carrier. I don't remember what I said that day, but I have been inspired by the courage, strength and wisdom of Sacajawea ever since. I'm always interested to learn new things about her.
On our vacation we decided to get off the interstate, and travel some back roads on the way to Yellowstone, and am I glad we did.
We came to a historical marker by a mountain meadow that said that the Shoshone people would come to these meadows every year to gather Camas bulbs, and likely Sacajawea came her too, to these meadows. I was so excited I forgot to take pictures of the location. I had always wondered where she might have lived when she was a girl.
We camped near there, by beautiful little May Creek. I wonder who else braved the mosquitoes in the past and walked in these cool waters?
Beautiful pictures...can imagine the mosquitoes...and am thankful they don't attend the photo observations...! LOL!
